In the early 1980s a group avid Girard readers with a core at the VU University Amsterdam formed a Study Circle. The group embraces academics from a wide variety of disciplines as well as members with a professional or existential interest in mimetic theory.

It has contributed to the popularisation opf mimetic theory in the Low Countries through publications, translations, conferences, and courses. Members help supervise PhD students. The group was instrumental in Girard being awarded his first honorary doctorate by the VU University (1985, video, in French).
